Brief thoughts on recent games

Yesterday I went out to dinner and decided to stop by the local GameStop to see if they received the new Castlevania for PS2. Personally I’m a real castlevania fan and I think I’ve played almost every game. There is just something with blasting the undead with a whip and crosses, holy water knives, etc, that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. When I got to the store and found out the did receive the game I bought it on the spot (I also bought rebel strike for the Gamecube, I’ll probably post about it later).

After getting the games, I go to the subway next to the gamespot buy myself a pizza (yes, subways in PR sell personal pizzas), eat it and head back to my apartment. As soon as I get back I drop my stuff, set up my laptop in my room and head to the living room to slay some undead. I put on the game and start playing. The first few minutes is basically the back story of the game, you are a knight named Leon Belmont, you protect your village, everyone loves you yadda yadda yadda. You soon find out that your Bethroved (I assume that means fiance) has been kidnap and undead are attacking your village. You get this information from a friend that used to be a knight but retired after having his wife killed. You are also told that the monsters are coming from this castle somewhere.

So after getting this information you, being the bad ass knight that you are, decide to go to the castle. The problem with this is that the church is busy stoning people people to death or something and they are not allowing for any journeys. Because of this, Leon decided to forsake his knighthood and go anyways. On your way to the castle, which Is covered by “eternal darkness”, you cross a forrest and then find an old man in front of the castle. The old man invites you to his cottage, and tells you how the owner of this castle loves playing cat and mouse with hunters, and how he always wins since he is a vampire. The only reason this old man is still alive is because he helps the adventurers which in turn keeps things interesting for the vampire. He talks a little about alchemy, gives you a whip and enchants your arm. On to the castle you go.

Here is where you start playing the game. Castlevania plays a lot like Devil May Cry, but definitely with a castlevania twist to it. Instead of a sword you have your trusty whip with two attacks. You also have the ability to use secondary weapons (such as crosses, knives, etc), ruins, double jump and sidestep. From the beginning you can do simple combos, such as three weak attacks, three strong attacks and permutations of the two. As the game goes on you receive newer, longer and airborn combos to improve your arsenal. The castle basically has five sub areas and then the area where you battle the final boss. Apparently you need to finish one of the areas first (the one I’m currently in) and then the others open up. The game mostly consists of whipping evil until it’s dead and some simple puzzles. I have no problem with this setup since I love whipping evil, and doing that with some castlevania tunes in the background is just great. I have not been able to play as much as I’d like, but until know the game is solid. I’d say it’s much better than devil may cry 2, but I’m not sure if it’s better than the first one. (The reason i compare with DMC is because when DMC came out, everybody said that this is how a castlevania in 3d should really look and feel). Overall I’m really enjoying the game and I’m happy I bought it, I don’t think it will take symphony of the night’s throne but it’s still worthy of the name Castlevania
