Switchers

Friday, November 25th, 2005

Scenario 1: You’re enjoying a coffee somewhere, with your new Mac laptop open on the table in front of you. You’re just surfing randomly. But you notice, over the lid of your computer, some guy giving you a funny look. He’s … smirking in your direction.

Dear switchers

So Funny, yet so true.

Xbox, or your life

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2005

Some gamers have gone to even greater extremes - like the man who robbed an Electronics Boutique store in Stafford, Virginia in the early hours of this morning. According to US website GameSpot, he held the store manager up at gunpoint and ordered him to hand over two Xbox 360s. Presumably ones with hard drives.

Surprised!

Wow, the administration slapping the wrists of a corporation:

“It’s very important to remember that it’s your intellectual property — it’s not your computer. And in the pursuit of protection of intellectual property, it’s important not to defeat or undermine the security measures that people need to adopt in these days.

IT Gigolo

Wednesday, November 16th, 2005

So, how long have you been a tech-support manwhore?
A few months. A friend was having trouble connecting to the Internet, this really attractive girl, and the idea just popped into my head: “Wow, it would be really nice if I could get sex for this.” I placed an ad on Craigslist that read, “WILL FIX COMPUTERS FOR SEXUAL FAVORS,” and I’ve had an overwhelming number of responses.

EFF vs. Sony

Monday, November 14th, 2005

It’s nice to see the EFF say something about this.

You must be aware that the discovery of this software has shocked and angered your customers. Software that deceives the owner of the computer it runs upon and opens that computer up to attacks by third parties may be expected to come from malicious cyber-attacks; it is certainly not expected nor acceptable to be distributed and sold to paying customers by a major music company. Accordingly, EFF welcomes your company’s decision to temporarily halt manufacturing CDs with XCP and to reexamine “all aspects” of your “content protection initiative.”

EFF: An Open Letter to Sony-BMG

Of course, in this situation they probably don’t have any leverage. But it’s the thought that counts.

Ballmer Speaks

Wednesday, November 9th, 2005

Thinking about the Windows Live announcement, there were some pretty harsh comments from analysts and from other sources around the Web. By contrast, Apple Computer usually gets this overwhelmingly positive response to almost anything it does–ditto for Google. Does that make you angry at times? How can you fix that?

Ballmer: There’s sort of the good news and the bad news. The good news is, the expectations are higher for us–frankly, I think–than for anyone else. These people think a lot of us, and it’s hard to always meet those demands. And we’re the big guy. We were the little guy for a while, we had a 10-year run where we were the darling.

Apple, because they kind of went though the valley of the shadow of death and have emerged, they are the darling again, even though they have been around for a while. And Google is still in that early phase. I know we’re doing good work. As long as we are doing good work and innovative work and exciting work, the customers are going to look at that, and they are not going to start and end with the analyst reports. They’ll start and end with the actual products we deliver.

Ballmer: Here’s why Microsoft is different | Tech News on ZDNet

Hmmm, I always thought everyone had high expectations of Apple products, even higher than MSFT products. Maybe Apple announcements are well received because of the fact that they actually meet expectations most of the time.
